Maha Shivratri, the night of the worship of Lord Shiva, takes place on the 14th night of the new moon in Phaalguna the dark half of the month. It falls on a moonless night of February, when Hindus offer special prayer to the Lord of destruction. Shivratri (Sanskrit ‘ ratri ‘ = night) is the night when he performed the Tandava Nritya or the dance of the primordial creation, preservation and destruction is said. The festival is observed for only a day and a night.
Origin of Shivratri:
According to the Puranas, called churning of the Ocean during the great mythical Samudra Manthan, a pot of poison derived from the ocean. The gods and demons were terrified as it could destroy the world. When they walked up to Shiva for help, he to protect the world, drunk with the deadly poison but kept it in his throat instead of swallowing. This turned his throat blue, and since then came to be known as ‘ one ‘, the Malay Nilkantha. Shivratri is celebrating this event that Shiva saved the world.
A Festival important for women:
Shivratri is considered especially beneficial for women. Married women pray for the welfare of their husbands and sons, while unmarried women pray for an ideal man as Shiva, who the husband of Kali, Parvati and Durga is. But it is generally of the opinion that anyone who the name of Shiva during Shivratri speaks with pure devotion is freed from all sins. He or she is the abode of Shiva reaches and is freed from the cycle of birth and death.
On the day of Shivratri, is a three-tiered platform built around a fire. ‘ Swargaloka (heaven), the middle ‘ a ‘ antarikshaloka ‘ (space) and the bottom ‘ bhuloka ‘ (Earth) represents the top shelf. Elf ‘ kalash ‘ or urns, are held on the shelf of the ‘ swargaloka ‘ symbolizes the 11 expressions of the ‘ Rudra ‘ or destructive Shiva. Each has been decorated with the leaves of ‘ Apple ‘ or ‘ Mucus ‘ bilva (Aegle marmelos) and mango on top of a coconut represent the head of Shiva.
